The camera club year runs from July through June.  All members participating in the regular competitions during the club year accrue points based on how each entry was scored.   All accrued points count toward annual awards given at the end of the club year.  A member, by notifying the Board, may move up to a higher class or may also request reclassification by the Board to move to a lower class.  Members will be notified at the beginning of the club year if the Board recommends they move to a higher class for the next year of competition.  The Board will resolve any disputes regarding classification.

  • Accumulation of the most points will receive appropriate awards

Definition:

Nature is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history EXCEPT ANTHROPOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation.  The story telling value of a photograph must be weighted more than the pictorial quality.

Human elements shall not be present, except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the nature story.   The present of scientific bands on wild animals is acceptable.

Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or domestic animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.

Entries that do not meet the definition of nature may be rejected.  In the event the judges reject an entry for not meeting the definition the maker has the option to withdraw the second entry after the judging to avoid a low score for competition.

Normal photographic steps such as crop, lighten, darken, and color balance are permitted.

Computer operations such as adding or removing objects, modifying selected areas or otherwise affecting the truthful presentation of the subject are not permitted.

Descriptive titles are recommended for nature pictures.  Cute titles should not be used.

Photojournalism:

  • Two divisions:  Prints & Projected Images
  • Competition on the first meeting of the month is for Prints and second meeting of the month is for Projected Images.   In both November and December, in which there is only one meeting, there will be Print competition in November and Projected Images in December.
  • All entrants compete as a single class
  • Accumulation of the most points will receive appropriate awards
  • Prints and Projected Images may be either Color or Monochrome or mixed

Definition:

Entries shall consist of pictures or sequences with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The  journalistic value of the photographic shall be considered over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, photographs which misrepresent the truth, such as manipulations to alter the subject matter, or situations which are set up for the purpose of photography, are unacceptable.

Entries that do not meet the definition of Photojournalism may be rejected.   In the event the judges reject an entry for not meeting the definition the maker has the option to withdraw the second entry after the judging to avoid a low score for competition.

Montages, derivations or otherwise manipulated projected images and prints are not eligible.  Print and/or Projected Image sequences may be entered by placing more than one picture on/in a single mount, or the permitted two Projected Images may be entered as a sequence and judged together.  For the latter, both slides will receive the same score.

Normal photographic steps such as crop, lighten, darken, and color balance are permitted.

Computer operations such as adding or removing objects, modifying selected areas or otherwise affecting the truthful presentation of the subject are not permitted.

Judging Guidelines:
Score:
5     You think this is a medal winner.
4       May not be first place, but at least deserves an HM or higher.
3       Take it or leave it.  Not bad but not great in your opinion.
2       You think this photo has multiple flaws and/or has no clear theme or subject.
1       You do not know why this was entered.  Photo is not appropriate for category or is extremely offensive or obscene.
(You will likely not use this score during club competition.  If the entry is not appropriate for the category,

bring it to the attention of the competition chairperson and they will likely remove the entry.  This will allow the member
to enter it at another time.)

Judges:

Judges will be selected by the Second Vice President.  Each member is expected to judge two or more times and will be responsible for finding a replacement in the event they are unable to judge.

In the event of questions about the interpretation and application of these rules - they may be referred to the Executive Board.
